Day 269 – 6/29/24

Starting location: Tied to the wall in downtown Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Weather: 62 am, 74 pm, overcast, drizzle off and on

Ending location: Tied to wall after Black Rapids Lock (#13) on Rideau Canal, Ontario, Canada

Statute miles: 9

General summary: Spent the rainy morning and early afternoon exploring downtown Ottawa. Downloaded an excellent self-guided walking tour I found via Tripadvisor and explored the historic district.

Statue of Colonel By, who was responsible for the development of the Rideau Canal. Ottawa was originally named Bytown.
Byward Market. A market building, by the same name, has been present within a block of this one since the start of the city.
Élisabeth-Bruyère hospital. Named after a nun, from the Order of the Sisters of Charity (or Grey Nuns) who brought care to the downtrodden and ill in this area.
Beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral
Office of the Prime Minister. Decorated in recognition of approaching Canada Day (July 1st)
Parliament building. Changing of the guard occurs here (we missed it)
Had classic Canadian poutine for lunch. French fries with gravy and cheese curds.
Street art based on local musician/artist’s work
Bottom stairs
Top stairs

Went to the Rideau (pronounced REE-doh) Canal museum, near the base of the 8-stepped lock.

Topographical map
49 locks with water heights and distances
Hand-cranked devices for swinging doors and letting water through

Left the wall in Ottawa in the afternoon and went through several locks to Black Rapids. There was a nice grassy area and a lock-keepers house. Two other boats tied up and it was a quiet night.

Last lock of the day
Wall at Black Rapids
Park-like setting
