Day 306 – 8/5/23

Starting location: Anchored by Big Burnt Island, in 30,000 islands area of Northern Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada

Weather: 65 am, 76 pm, rain overnight, cloudy

Ending location: Moored at Wright’s Marina in town of Britt, Bying Inlet, in 30,000 islands area of Northern Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada

Statute miles: 24

General summary: We headed back out of Alexander Passage in an attempt to make it to the Bustard Islands again and noted the wave heights had improved enough, but we would have had to take them on our side (abeam) if we stayed in the small craft channel close to shore. This would mean trying to weave in and out of small rock outcroppings while being heavily rocked from side to side. We chose, instead, to go straight out into the Bay, where it was deeper and without obstructions, and take them on our bow. A safer plan, but uncomfortable and slow. Decided to turn early into Bying Inlet and stay at Wright’s Marina for the night, instead of continuing on. A nice family-run marina with everything we needed and a $20 AGLCA discount. There was a welcome ice cream stand, as well.

No, thanks

We had been keeping an eye on the news about Hurricane Debby, which was approaching the Big Bend of Florida and learned it had landed in Steinhatchee as a Category 1 storm. This is the small town we spent 11 nights in during a stormy period in December, so feel a distinct connection. They had been hit hard the year prior by category 3 Hurricane Isabel and we knew just how badly they were damaged then. Now, it is heading for North Florida then the Georgia and South Carolina coasts we had traveled through in the spring. Glad we saw them beforehand and hope they survive as unscathed as possible.
