Day 297 – 7/27/24

Starting location: Anchored in Pittsburgh Channel in 30,000 islands area of Northern Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada

Weather: 64 am, 74 pm, sunny

Ending location: Anchored by Wreck Island in 30,000 islands area of Northern Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada

Statute miles: Approximately 20

General summary: We pulled up anchor and motored back out of Go Home Bay and meandered around to Wreck Island, named after the wreck of a steamer (the Wabuno) during a late November storm in 1879. There was an excellent 1.5 km trail with nine well-marked interpretive points to stop and learn about the Parry Sound Greenstone Geology of the area. Much of this rock is over 1 billion years old and likely was at the base of a sea, then lifted up over years through tectonic forces, then re-exposed through repeated glaciation and erosion. Got some good exercise and education. Then, we anchored nearby for the night. One benefit of having so many rocks of various sizes popping out of the water is the net effect of wind blocking. There are numerous well-protected spots for anchoring.

Provincial park.
Day dock
Wavy due to tectonic forces. Softer dark gray layers (mafic) wash away more quickly than darker grey (granitic), forming cracks and crevasses.
Some newer rocks are “pegmatite crystalline dikes”, that splash over old the two-toned grey base. They were white (quartz), pink (feldspar), and black (biotite mica) and reflected light spectacularly.
A boulder, of completely different composition, brought down from the North with the collapse of an ice dam 14,000 years ago
