Days 250-251 – 6/10-11/24

Starting location: Moored at Half Moon Bay Marina, Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

Weather: mid 50’s am, high 70s pm, partly cloudy – both days

Ending location: Moored at Cortland Yacht Club Marina, Montrose, NY.

Statute miles: 6, then 0 until departure

General summary: Time for some boat maintenance. We had scheduled a haul out at this marina, at a nice discount, with the help of a super friendly harbor host. Got a snap replaced on a window cover en route at a different marina that had a canvas repair shop. Every single boat owner in this marina offered any help that could be provided (“need a ride to the grocery store?”, etc.) . People talk about New Yorkers being unfriendly, but this has not been our experience. Our boat was hauled out and put on stilts and blocks “on the hard” in preparation for an oil change the next day. We took the opportunity to inspect the underside – no evidence of hull damage from our prior log interaction. The bottom paint from 3 years ago is still holding up well. Spent 4 hours cleaning the sides, trim tabs, and bottom. Slept that night inside the V-berth hovering over land, which felt odd after 9 months on water. Oil change was timely and efficient the following day. Then we were slung back into the water and motored to our slip for the night.

Hull before
Hull after
Trim tab before – slime and barnacles
Trim tab after (other side, but you get the point)

Things that have broken and were fixed:

1. Snap on head (bathroom) privacy curtain had corroded and separated. Canvas place graciously did not charge us to replace it.

Left is new – chrome as they didn’t have any green tops.

2. When we last pumped out at a prior marina stop, we experienced a brief gusher when the waste tank cap was removed. This caused a very stinky mess, and the cap disappeared in the drink. Turns out, the relief air hose had corroded shut, which led to an increasingly pressurized tank each time we had flushed. Tom fashioned a new temporary hose (which will likely remain until we get home as he has to remove the batteries to re-connect as well as pry off the through-hull cover). We finally got the package with the metal cover, so the temporary saran wrap cap is gone.

Replaced waste tank cover and temporary air vent

Things that need to be fixed, but West Marine doesn’t seem to be able to get it in stock: Refrigerator. Still struggling along.

“People talk about New Yorkers being unfriendly, but this has not been our experience.” I’ve encountered the same unfounded rumors separately with the French and the Germans: supposedly unfriendly until actually talking to them.

I’m sure there’s something satisfying, something intangibly calming, about being in a shiny, clean boat again as it cuts through the miles.
