Day 217 – 5/8/24

Starting location: Moored at DiMillo’s Marina, Oxford, MD.

Weather: 65 am, 86 pm, sunny

Ending location: Tied up to free wall downtown Cambridge, MD

Statute miles: 12

General summary: Motored East on the Choptank River and hoped to anchor in LaTrappe Creek behind a sandy spit, but there were no trespassing signs everywhere on land, so went to the town of Cambridge instead. There is a concrete wall there where you can tie up for free for up to 72 hours. Walked around town – great small grocery store, bakery with tasty treats, lots of cafes with al fresco dining. This area is close to Harriet Tubman’s birthplace and where a large part of the Underground Railroad took place. Unfortunately, the museum was closed and the recently developed National Park was more than 8 miles away.

I’m reading a book titled Master Slave Husband Wife about a couple who escaped slavery in 1848. The woman could easily pass as white because her dad had been white and probably also her one granddad. She dressed as a man and her husband was her “slave.” They took the train and steamers from a small town outside Macon to Philadelphia. It’s a very interesting book and so where you’re visiting right now resonates.
