Day 206 – 4/27/24

Starting location: The docks at downtown Hampton, VA.

Weather: 54 am, 64 pm, cloudy.

Ending location: Old Point Comfort Marina, Fort Monroe, VA.

Statute miles: 2

General summary: We had hoped to see Fort Monroe while in Hampton, since it would have been a short Uber ride. The weather in the Bay was not conducive to moving on a significant distance, so we either had to spend another night in Hampton or move to another local marina. Turns out there was a marina just next to the Fort and only a 2 mile distance by water. We had to briefly go back out into the James River but tucked back into Mill Creek before getting out into much more exposed water. Very helpful dockmaster. Spent the day checking out the Fort and learning local history.

Still functioning lighthouse
Fort, still surrounded by a moat
Wall section where Jefferson Davis was imprisoned after the Civil War
Inside look
Area where first slaves landed
And where slavery ended, coming full circle at nearly the same place.

Wow, a day packed with history, some of it pretty depressing and even the end of slavery a bit of a downer in how many hundreds of years it took. Ugh. The photos are really informative. Thanks for taking the time to write. It’s great to armchair travel with you!
