Day 61 – 12/3/23

Starting location: Seville Marina, Pensacola, FL

Weather: 67 am. Overcast. Muggy. 75 pm. A few sun breaks before sunset.

Ending location: Anchorage near Fort Pickens, FL

Statute miles: Approximately 6

General summary: Winds had calmed and it was time to move on. Smooth ride to anchorage immediately on bay side of a narrow barrier island. Dinghied over and followed a sandy trail in the center to several old military forts that were used in fights with the Spanish in the 1800s and the Civil War. Total of about 4 miles out and back. Surprised to learm the Florida National Scenic trail runs through nearly the entire state. Dinghied back. Could hear the breakers on the Gulf side all night, but calm on our side.

Battery Worth
Circles where cannons used to rotate 360 degrees in order to aim in the right direction.
Fort Pickins
Fort Pickins is where this trail starts
Trail ends at Big Cypress National Preserve, almost at the Southern end of Florida. See orange line.

Boater information: Watch depth closely on approach to Fort Pickens anchorages as there are areas that have silted in a bit and are more shallow than charted. Exposed to all winds but South, so best in fair weather.

Wide shot
Closer shot. Anchored at blue dot.

I remain totally jealous of all you’re seeing and doing – especially the Florida National Scenic Trail. So cool!
