Day 55 – 11/27/23

Starting location: Perdido Key Marina, FL

Weather: 46 am. Breezy. Partly sunny. Upper 50s pm. Mostly sunny.

Ending location: Anchorage at Fort McRee, GICW EHL 178.7

Statute miles: Approximately 7

General summary: Walked to Johnson Beach (part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore) from the marina, about 5 miles round trip. Very windy today and on the cold side. We could walk Cocoa on the road and boardwalks, but not on the beach. $70 fine for each dog, each occurrence.

Walked from marina in the early morning. Bundled up for beach walk. Gulf side of Johnson Beach. Solo as Tom stayed with Cocoa by the walkway.

Motored on to a beautiful anchorage surrounded on 3 sides by white sand. Favorite swimming hole and party beach for locals in summer. Good wind protection, which is helpful for today as gusts will get to high 20s (mph). One side is also GINS (monetary fine for dog walks). Other side is made from leftover sand from dredging and dogs are allowed. Easy dinghy ride over. A mailbox is situated on top on one sand dune for some reason. Pretty sure this is not a post office pick up site. Filled with seashells, no letters.

Anchorage at Ft. McRee. Six other boats joined overnight. On the North island where dogs are allowed. Also called “Sand Island”, “Robertson Island”, and “Dog Isle”.
Had to check it out

We are near a Naval Airbase and the Blue Angels flew overhead periodically.

Blue Angels plane.

Boater information: Apple maps takes you East of the Perdido Key Marina to get to Johnson Beach, but there is a nice cement walkway directly from the marina via Tranquility Lane all the way to the road that goes left to the park. $15 pedestrian fee for 7 day pass.

Anchored on blue dot. Enter only from West side (East is silted in). Better wind protection closer to Sand Island, but other boats got there first.

The mailbox is amusing and it’s super cool the Blue Angels are nearby. Ailsa and I went to see them for Seafair this August. They are (no surprise to anyone) loud!
