General summary: It was a relatively calm ride towards the West end of the North Channel and then South in between Saint Joseph Island in Canada and Drummond Island in the US to arrive at the marina in DeTour Village on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We used the CBP Roam app to contact customs and after a quick video-chat with the officer we were cleared and given our registration number. Easy and only took about 5 minutes. Michigan has a nice system of state-supported municipal marinas along its West side (or the East side of Lake Michigan). They are spaced closely enough (generally 30 miles apart) and well protected from storms by heavy concrete breakwaters or long channels into an area otherwise encircled by land. They all use a web site for advanced reservations, so once you put your data in, further reservations are easy. Same day reservations require a phone call. They are supposed to find room at the last minute for boats getting out of bad weather. Lake Michigan is big water and storms can crop up quickly and unexpectedly. Not much to do in DeTour Village, but we stayed for two nights as winds were strong. Did some provisioning, as we had to finish or get rid of any fresh fruits or vegetables prior to re-entry.
