Day 305 – 8/4/24

Starting location: Moored on government dock at Pointe au Baril Station, in 30,000 islands area of Northern Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada

Weather: 67 am, 76 pm, mostly to partly cloudy, W winds 15-20

Ending location: Anchored by Big Burnt Island, in 30,000 islands area of Northern Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada

Statute miles: 15

General summary: We intended to make it to the Bustard Islands, but the small craft channel, which had mostly been sandwiched between land masses, went into open Bay waters as we motored out of Alexander Passage, and the waves were a bit too big for our liking. So, we turned back a bit and anchored for the night in a well-protected private cove (no nearby cottages) next to Burnt Bridge Island. Anchor held well and we had a quiet night.

Pointe au Baril Lighthouse, which we passed on the way out of Pointe au Baril Channel
A barrel was used in pioneer times to identify the point where you can enter the safe channel from Georgian Bay (hence the French translation of the name “Barrel Point”) and so there is this preserved landmark near the lighthouse.
