Day 245-246 – 6/5-6/24

Starting location: Moored at Historic Gardner’s Basin Marina, Atlantic City, NJ.

Weather: mid 60s am, low 80s then high 70s pm, sunny one day, rain off an on next

Ending location: Moored at Hudson Point Marina, Jersey City, NJ.

Statute miles: 112, then 0 until departure

General summary: The weather cooperated nicely and we were able to motor in the Atlantic all the way from Atlantic City, past Sandy Hook in New Jersey, to New York Harbor, and into the Hudson River to New York. This passage had concerned me because of the long fetch in the vast open water from Europe to the US, but waves were nicely spaced apart and less than 2 feet high all the way. There was a lot of large confused boat wake as we passed The Battery, due to many ferries and large boats, but the Gulf crossing still wins as our worst experience so far. What an awesome sight to motor under the Verrazano bridge and then past the Statue of Liberty! I could just imaging arriving here as an immigrant after a long overseas voyage.

Marinas in NYC were shockingly expensive ($300-500 per night), so we moored in a small family-owned marina in New Jersey just across from Manhattan. Super friendly and helpful dockhand who spent about a half an hour orienting us, including walking us around to show us the local sights and dog park. Then, he refused the tip we offered. Again, we are floored at how generous and kind many people are!

The following day, I walked to Liberty Landing and bought a ticket to ride the tourist ferry to Ellis Island and then the Statue of Liberty.

Ellis Island
Baggage room – where immigrants had to briefly part with all their worldly possessions, afraid they may never see them again.
Registry room – where every person was observed by medical professionals climbing up the stairs and marked with chalk on their coats for further examination if any ailments were perceived. Then, lines snaked through the hallway for people to wait in line for questioning and paperwork processing.
Eye exam for evidence of trachoma – which was one reason you could get you immediately sent back home. Every passenger had been required to purchase a round trip ticket, just in case.
The hearing room, where those people who triggered non-medical concerns on initial intake were further questioned by a panel of three judges.
Dormitory for those under continued evaluation who required an overnight stay.

Next, another ferry ride to the base of the Statue of Liberty.

There is so much more to do in NJ and NYC, but I will have to come back here for a land-based stay sometime in the future for that.
