Day 243 – 6/3/24

Starting location: Rental on Magothy River

Weather: 60s am, 70s pm, sunny

Ending location: Anchored in Cohansey Cove on North side of Delaware Bay.

Statute miles: 94

General summary: It was a bittersweet day for me as the family gathering was ending, everyone was heading home, and I was leaving Maryland (unsure if I’ll ever return) but traveling on the Bay had been thoroughly enjoyable with great weather, the rental was just right, the time with family very special, and the long-planned events successful.

We motored up the Bay North, past some areas on the East and West shores we had already explored, on to the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. This connects the Chesapeake Bay to the Delaware Bay. Appearance of the channel reminded us of the Ten-Tom on occasion – narrow man-made sections with stacked boulder rock walls. Passed other boats and a barge. Then, the waterway opened up to the Delaware Bay. Similar to the Chesapeake in that it is an estuary leading Southeast to the Atlantic Ocean, but altogether different in that it is sparsely populated. The Chesapeake is loaded with rivers that are navigable on both sides with numerous anchorages and marinas. These are few and far between on the Delaware Bay. There is also the risk of big chop if the current and wind are strong and in opposition. We, fortunately, had good luck with both. Easy ride to our anchorage that we had all to ourselves. Small sandy beach for dog relief. Quiet night.
