General summary: We checked several forecasts and it looked like a mixed bag for heading further South, so we decided to head out through Indian Key Pass to get a feel of things. As soon as we got into open water, it was clearly too choppy. We could have done it, but it would have been slow and less comfortable than we’d hoped, then a potentially rough night in an exposed anchorage. Nope. Been there, done that. Instead of returning to the Rod and Gun Club, we dropped anchor next to a sand-rimmed island near the channel opening and tried to position ourselves so the land and trees blocked the wind. This was challenging with the somewhat varying wind direction. At least the breeze seemed to be keeping the mosquitoes at bay.
