Day 44 – 11/16/23

Starting location: Bashi Creek, AL

Weather: Overcast, mid 50s am. Sun breaks. Low 70s pm.

Ending location: Anchored in Turkey Creek, AL. MM 121 on Ten-Tom

Statute miles: 24

General summary: Very quiet night. Took our time in the morning with coffee and breakfast. Motored dinghy to boat ramp where there was a short dock for tie-up where our feet (and paws) did not get muddy. Walked along red sand path that followed the river to an empty public park, then further down a road where we came across a cotton field. Surprising amount of cotton still on plants after harvest. Could feel lots of seeds when touched. Must have been such a chore to harvest before the cotton gin. Returned to boat, pulled anchor, and motored to Bobby’s Fish Camp, which is the last gas stop before Mobile. It is a very rustic spot, similar to Hoppies. Got gas and thought about locking through Coffeeville Lock, but two barges still needed to pass and it was getting late. Considered staying at Bobby’s, but decided to backtrack 2 miles and anchor. Will lock through early tomorrow morning.

Nice red sand path that followed river

Small harvest
Turkey Creek, wildlife refuge

Boater information: Turkey Creek has good depth far in. A bit wider than Bashi Creek was. Can take dinghy further in where there is a shallow lake. Lots of birds. Not great for dog relief, but do-able on muddy side access. Good Verizon cell coverage. Only 4 miles from Coffeeville Lock and Dam.

*Someone in history* *looks at cotton plant*
“I can make a shirt out of this!”

It just doesn’t seem likely, like getting to hot chocolate or even bread on seeing the original plant.
