Day 40 – 11/12/23

Starting location: Anchorage at Oxbow, AL

Weather: Overcast. 55 am. 65 pm. Drizzle off and on.

Ending location: Kingfisher Bay Marina, Demopolis, AL. MM 217 on Ten-Tom

Statute miles: 48

General summary: Calm night, little wind. Other boat left at the crack of dawn, but we took our time a bit. Turned on radio and navigation system and learned there were 9 boats coming to lock through Hefflin soon, so pulled anchor after dingy dog relief stop and motored ahead of them. Passed white cliffs of Epps, a popular Looper photo op. An internet search indicates these are part of the Selma Chalk Formations, deposited around the same time as the White Cliffs of Dover in England. Easy cruise to marina. Got gas and signed up for courtesy car for tomorrow to do some shopping. Lots of land stuff to do as this is the last opportunity (except for one gas stop) until Mobile. Walked into a historic area of Demopolis about 1.5 miles away. Historic homes and mostly empty storefronts, though many recently sold and one new restaurant, so things could be changing. I keep asking people when we might need to worry about Alligators. They are apparently here, but rarely seen. We will not be letting Cocoa off leash near water now.

Boater information: Kingfisher Bay Marina does now have a gas dock – both diesel and regular as well as pump out. The slips are single bow-in and roomy. The floating main building has showers (3 women, 3 men), a spacious laundry room (4 washers, 5 dryers), and an open upstairs sitting area. Water and power at slips. Grassy areas nearby for dog walks. There is apparently a pool, but we haven’t found it yet. Staff very friendly and helpful.
