Day 26 – 10/29/23

Starting location: Lick Creek, TN

Weather: Hard rain overnight, muggy, overcast in am, partly sunny and high 70s afternoon

Ending location: Moored in Clifton Marina, TN. Between MM 158-159 on Tennessee River

Statute miles: Approximately 30

General summary: As we were preparing to head out of the creek in the morning, we noticed one of the two other much larger boats that had anchored near us was sitting still in the channel opening. They contacted us over radio and warned they were stuck aground as they had tried to motor out. Apparently the upriver dam had reduced water outflow overnight a great deal, dropping water levels. We were able to maneuver around their starboard side and were assured they were getting help. They had also contacted the dam operator about increasing flow, which might take 6-8 hours to make much difference. (I didn’t even know one could request this.) They were kind enough to send us a photo from that morning’s sunrise. Once out into the Tennessee River, we noticed it naturally narrowed and was meandering again, so little chop. Passed some barges. Lots of heron and egrets. Riverside rock views changing. Made it to Clifton Marina without any problems, got gas, took courtesy car to get groceries. Ate dinner at dockside restaurant – alligator poppers for appetizers. Seems we have developed a taste for them. Running in to other Loopers we have met before and enjoyed hearing about their adventures. New people, too. Heard the stuck boat had been able to get off ground and had motored on ahead.

Neighboring boat captured this picture of us at sunrise. Very kind to share it.
Change on shore from crumbly sandstone to solid rock layers.

Boater information: Clifton Marina had boat gas (regular and diesel), power, showers, restaurant, courtesy car. No pump out. Nearest grocery store, Dollar General, had reasonable food selections.

    “Hard rain overnight”
Not enough rain to unstuck those boats, evidently.
Does the rain wake you up in your boat? How loud is it?

Does wake us up, which is actually good because we need to shut the side windows before everything inside gets wet.
